The new Moomin Mug Mania exhibition opens 26th September!

The Moomin Mug Mania exhibition explores Moomin mugs as iconic and hugely popular collectibles. The exhibition features the first Moomin mug and plate that Tove Jansson designed in the 1950s, as well as the 0,3 litre Moomin mugs that Arabia has produced since the 1990s – from popular favourites to sought-after collector’s gems. The exhibition also includes internationally produced mugs, such as those from Japan.

Love, desire and identity - new guided tour

A Queer-themed guided tour explores queer and LGBTQIA+ themes through the life of Tove Jansson during the years when the Moomin books were created. The richness and versatility of Jansson’s expression are revealed in the stories of the Moomin books, her illustrations, and the letters she wrote – even in her secret language. The tour can be booked for groups.

Moomin House - our pride and joy

On the lower level of the museum, you’ll find our centrepiece exhibit: a five-storey, over two-metre-tall tableaux of the Moomin House. The enchantingly detailed model was crafted by Tuulikki Pietilä, Dr Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson, taking them three years to build. It was unveiled at the Bratislava Biennial of Illustration in 1979, after which it toured the Nordic countries. Today it is a permanent exhibit that can be seen only at the Moomin Museum.

The city of courage and openness – Tampere is Home of the Moomin Museum

The Moomins and the people of Tampere have a lot in common. Earthiness, eccentricity and the courage to embark on an adventure. It’s easy to come to Tampere – as if the doors were always open. There is the courage to build something new, to go where no one has gone before. Could there be a more fitting place for the world’s only Moomin Museum?

LGBTQIA friendly

Like Moomin House, everyone is welcome at the Moomin Museum! We want to provide our customers with the safest, most enjoyable and accessible museum experience possible. We are also a member of the We Speak Gay community.
