Moomin relationships and favourite illustrations – Event Day 21 September 2024

Colourful painting of Moomins in the garden.

The Moomin Museum’s event day celebrates the museum’s new illustrations. Tove Jansson’s delicate original Moomin artwork needs a rest after being exhibited to be preserved for future generations, so once again the whole set has been redone. Now even the frequent museum-goer will be delighted by the never-before-seen illustrations.

To mark the occasion, the illustrations are viewed from many different angles. During the day, we will be joined by well-known people from Tampere who will talk about their own relationship with the Moomins, their favourite books or the significance of the Moomin world for them (in Finnish).

One of the people telling stories is musician Mara Balls, who often compares gig situations to “being like Hattifatteners in the dark, all the people together, shining light and trusting each other”. Come and hear more from Mara and other guests!

The Moomin Museum’s Studio is open all day with the new workshop. The drawing workshop invites you to join the story and get involved in the design of the initial letters. Tove Jansson combined Moomin characters and capital letters in her initial letters in many books. The workshop will explore the combination of image and text through book design, typography and graphic design. The aim of the special initial letter is to add visual interest to the text and entice the reader to delve deeper into the story.

On the day of the celebration, museum visitors will also have the chance to vote for their favourite illustration. Come and choose your favourite and welcome to celebrate the new illustrations with us!

A more detailed programme for the day will be confirmed soon.
