POP UP Momin Museum at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport
Passengers in Terminal 1 at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport are being treated to a special glimpse of Tove Jansson’s Moominland Midwinter courtesy of the new Moomin Museum opening this June. From Moomintroll to Fillyjonk, the terminal is filled with Moominvalley’s most beloved inhabitants, who are visiting the airport along with a snow castle and art show on display in the departure lounge, featuring digigraphs of Tove Jansson’s original illustrations for Moominsummer Madness. However gloomy the skies may be, Jansson’s cheerful characters, magical winter landscapes, and summery illustrations offer an enchanting distraction that puts fun into waiting for a plane.
“The Moomins are an important part of Finnish culture. We’re delighted to host this exhibition at the airport and to be able to offer our passengers a fresh, fun experience. Hundreds of thousands of passengers pass through the airport every year. This collaboration brings welcome visibility to the new Moomin Museum, which is important for the whole region of Tampere,” says Finavia’s Mari Nurminen, Airport Manager at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport.
Until mid-June, the pop-up museum at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport will offer a sneak peak of what’s in store at the new Moomin Museum.
The world’s first Moomin Museum opens at Tampere Hall on June 17, 2017. The Moomin Museum will display Tove Jansson’s original illustrations for her Moomin books as well as three-dimensional tableaux depicting her stories. Jansson donated a unique collection of over 2,000 original works to the Tampere Art Museum in 1986. Part of the collection was on display for three decades at Tampere Art Museum’s Moominvalley, which closed in October 2016. The new Moomin Museum displays a wider selection of illustrations and tableaux than ever before in a new, experiential setting. The Moomin Museum also hosts the Reading Room at Tampere Hall, which opened in November 2016, where visitors can browse Moomin books in multiple languages. Also open is the new Tampere Hall Shop, which sells a selection of Moomin souvenirs. The ‘Making of’ exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the new Moomin Museum in Tampere Hall’s Winter Garden until May 8, 2017.
