What Happens Next?

What Happens Next? presents all twelve Moomin books written and illustrated by Tove Jansson. The original illustrations and paintings displayed at each book stop reveal how her style of illustration evolved and how the characters changed from book to book. Jansson’s original texts are featured alongside the illustrations. Also listen to dramatized re-enactments of scenes from the books and read the info-panels to learn about the personal philosophies of the wise Moomin characters. The residents of Moominvalley are introduced in detail in the character gallery, but if you pay close attention, you can also find them hiding around the museum.

The Moomin Museum’s collection of drawings and paintings by Jansson are rounded out with a selection of three-dimensional Moomin tableaux by her partner, the graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä. The tableaux are miniature scenographic interpretations of scenes from the Moomin books and comic strips. In all, the exhibition features nearly 400 original Moomin illustrations and around 30 tableaux selected from the Tampere Art Museum Moominvalley Collection.
The pride and centrepiece of the exhibition is the five-storey, three-metre-high blue Moominhouse – a house of many secrets. Where is the electrical wiring diagram? And where is Moominmma’s jam cellar? Does the Moominhouse have a sauna? Come find out! You can also explore and move about in the virtual 3D Moominhouse. The original Moominhouse tableau is a pastiche of architectural styles. It is not an exact replica of the house portrayed in the books, but every detail is meticulously planned and executed. The house was built by Jansson, Pietilä and their friend, the physician  Pentti Eistola.

The opening of the new Moomin Museum marks the public debut of the Paraphernalia Collection donated by Jansson and Pietilä, which forms a fascinating supplement to the actual art collection. The Paraphernalia Collection comprises sketches, tools, supplies and various materials used in crafting the Moomin tableaux.

The one-of-a-kind exhibition design takes the visitor on a journey into a land of fantasy: you can crawl into the magician’s hat, stand in a snowstorm on a glacier, and watch a fiery comet streak across the night sky. The unique colour scheme of the exhibition is based on Jansson’s original illustrations for The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My.

Tomorrow is a fresh, new day, remember. And it’ll be all yours, from beginning to end.
