Tampere celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Moomins
2025 will be the 80th anniversary of the Moomin stories. The first Moomin tale, The Moomins and the Great Flood, was published in 1945. The central theme of the Moomin anniversary is the Moominhouse and what it stands for – a sense of belonging and a place where the door is always open.
The hometown of the Moomin Museum, Tampere, will celebrate the anniversary with many different Moomin-related events, performances and exhibitions throughout the year.
The gem of the Moomin Museum’s collection is the original Moominhouse built by Tove Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and Pentti Eistola. In Tampere, one of the highlights of the year is the exhibition Welcome to Moominhouse!
Festivities kick off on Epiphany
The events, which reflect the essence of Tampere, will enliven the city, offer community experiences, participation and be part of the international anniversary program.
The anniversary year begins with the Midwinter Magic festivities, and during the winter holiday week, you can encounter Moomins not only at the museum but also at other cultural sites in the city. On Tove Jansson´s birthday, August 9, 2025 the Moomin 80 – The Great Birthday Party will be held at Tampere Hall. One of the highlights of the year is the exhibition Welcome to Moominhouse! in Moomin Museum.
Libraries host discussions and cultural centers organize performances and workshops. Moomin fans also have the chance to create their own art during the celebrations, with the My Moominhouse competition inviting everyone to create their own version of the Moominhouse.
Our doors are always open! Come and celebrate the anniversary in the hometown of the Moomin Museum!
