Selma Green appointed Museum Director of the Tampere Art Museum

Art historian Selma Green (M.A.) has been appointed Museum Director of the Tampere Art Museum and Moomin Museum. She will assume her duties as the new Museum Director on 1 January 2023.

During her extensive career, Green has served as Museum Director of the Konstmuseet i Norr, Norrbotten County Art Museum in Sweden and the Vaasa City Museums, including the Ostrobothnian Museum and Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art/Tikanoja Art Museum, for a total of ten years. In addition to this, she has edited several art publications, lectured on art history and contemporary art, and served as an assistant, an exhibition secretary and a cultural producer in visual arts organisations and art museums.   Green says that she is eager to take on her new assignment, as the Tampere Art Museum and Moomin Museum combine her long-standing passion for art history, cooperating with contemporary artists and a living connection with the visiting public and partners of the art museum.    – I’m so excited to start developing operations at Tampere Art Museum and Moomin Museum at precisely this moment in time, on the threshold of change and facing a new age. The magnificent array of museums in Tampere also has very well-established networks in Finland and abroad. I want to focus on the current operational situation and introduce new approaches to all forms of operations and units, and do this together with the skilled professionals at the Art Museum, explains Green.    According to Cultural Director Juha Ahonen, Green has a broad understanding of the museum sector and art museum content.   – During her career, Selma has developed the content, structures and operating processes of several museum organisations. In her work, Green has also highlighted themes such as participatory museum activities as well as accessibility and diversity. Green’s abilities as a moderate instigator of change and motivator provide Tampere Art Museum with excellent opportunities to develop its current operations, so that the possibilities of the new museum building being planned have been taken into account in the best possible way, says Ahonen.   The Tampere Art Museum is part of the City of Tampere’s cultural services, and its operation include not only the Art Museum, but also the Moomin Museum. Tampere Art Museum administers Finland’s second largest art collection and, as a museum with regional responsibility, it follows the visual culture of Pirkanmaa and serves regional actors. In its exhibition operations, the museum prominently presents the history of art and modern art phenomena in its domestic and international exhibitions.    The Moomin Museum, which is part of the Tampere Art Museum organisation, presents an internationally significant collection of Tove Jansson’s illustration art. Exhibitions at the Tampere Art Museum and Moomin Museum also include research and publication activities as well as public work linked to the exhibition themes.
